Breastfeeding & Faith

What does faith have to do with breastfeeding? For me, it was the foundation of success.

All of the metrics and measurements disconnected me from my intuition. They put my focus outward on watching pump output and panicking about milliliters. They outsourced my wisdom to others.

Don't get me wrong. Data has a time and place. That being said, women breastfed since the dawn of history long before scales and charts. There is a part of breastfeeding that relies on trusting the process. Anxiety and stress work against the physiology of lactation. There is a balance to art and medicine.

Unfortunately, western society has tipped the scales too far. Let's not forget that it's the medical system that interrupted, discouraged, and shamed breastfeeding leading to irreversible change. While I'm so grateful for modern medicine, I also know the power of our five senses. Take the time to engage them. There is power in being present. Take the time to clear your mind. There is power in taking it one moment at a time.

God designed breastfeeding. Just as each of us is fearfully and wonderfully made, so is his design for breastfeeding. He does not make mistakes. Jesus can walk alongside you during the best times and the hardest times.

Oftentimes, breastfeeding will strip you down to your core. It will slow you down. It will require a lot of time disconnecting from productivity and being present. Sometimes, it will be frustrating and overwhelming. Other times it will be relaxing and comforting. Invite Jesus into your journey and watch Him bless you.

You got this, mama and there is a village here to help. Book a consultation today if you would like a lactation consultant to pray over you.
